even though it seems working nicely, the "Nose-driven" resulting voice makes me wonder why Nasa chose it for the astronaut's communications; since IMHO it makes the voice not so clear. Sure at those times, there were already hi-q microphones around. And since clear comms are a key factor in those risky (Apollo Era) adventures, I'm wondering why they used it?
Amazing how the sound signature of these mics gives you that instant Apollo vibe. Use the occasion to reenact some icons, like "One step for Fran, one giant leap for frankind" 🙂
I converted a Vietnam era chopper pilots helmet to play in concert with war movies and can watch listen and respond . It looks weird when my friends come in but it's fun for me !
The sound is just about vintage perfect! Add a little beep that you can activate at the end of the conversation and you'll be flying in space already!
Great job Fran. Very nice audio quality. One suggestion, instead of shrinking your heat shrink tubing with your soldering iron, buy one of those inexpensive heat style paint strippers. They do a much better job and don't leave any burn marks.
I had a project I could not finish because a tiny amp in it picked up so much noise and I could not fabricate a rigid metal cage that would fit inside the enclosure space. I never thought about using layers of nonconducting and conducting tape to make a Faraday cage.
I think I need to go find that project again.

The mic sounds exactly like Houston comms. I swear we'd hear the breakup of comms when Fran says "This is one small step for Fran, one giant for crackle kind …" 🙂
As a heads up, even after isolating, there is a painful high pitch tone that comes through the recording. Not everyone can here it, so you may not have noticed. Look at it in your sound editor or run a FFT on it and i think you'll see it. If your flight video has this present, many simply will not able to listen without getting a painful headache.
yeah that silicone electrical wrap works the biscuit. toyota remote start kits come with extra and I always save it. keep the videos coming and anything about tube amplifiers and tubes would be of interest to me. cheers!
Love the sound of that little Apollo mic! Makes me want to hook up the '60's headset I got somewhere to my recording stuff, can't wait to hear the sound of that. It's a pretty elaborate heavy duty set, no idea from what our where but it sure looks professional from an Era fine by. Perhaps airplane or something like that. Who knows, could be from some nuke -base :-p
Hey Fran, how about doing an episode about the problems that NASA and the satellite manufacturers have had with tin whiskers and dendrites forming because of the use of lead free solder, and causing short circuits? I have also heard a rumor that they suffered failures years ago due to the use of so called "contact preservatives" which ended up causing corrosion…..
Nicely done Fran, loving that Zoom recorder! Had you thought of using large diameter heat shrink for the final layer, instead of the silicone tape?

Friend you may not be aware of it but there are commercially available headsets that plug straight into those inexpensive FRS radios no special mods needed.
I have been using "self vulcanizing" or "mastic" tape 3M 2228 for ages. And now I hear and see that there is a silicone version. WHERE??? I'm already drooling! Actually I once tried my skill in making multi layer PCB, where I had some extremely thin silicone film that was used to glue two etched boards together. Cumbersome, but it worked. The problem is, I don't know where I got that film either.
