In this installment of NASA's Aeronautics and Space Report No. 47 we get an inside look at the special training Astronauts got in surviving parachute jumps, and it really looks like a lot of fun! Also we see the world's first space based telescope, the Orbiting Astronomical Observatory also known as Stargazer being readied for launch just ahead of Apollo 8 in 1968.

If this is OAO, and the film is from 1968, I wonder if this is OAO-2 or OAO-B, since OAO-1 would have already been launched two years prior.
I am guessing OAO-2 which discovered hydrogen around comets, since they say it's soon to be launched (OAO-B was launched in 1970, but due to a failure it did not reach orbital velocity and was destroyed on reentry).
It's kind of amazing to think how relatively recent so much of our astronomical knowledge actually is.

Very interesting! When I was a kid, I was absolutely obsessed with parachutes, and was always checking out books on parachutes from the library. I can't tell you how many pictures of these exercises I saw in those book! Very interesting to see movies of them from the same timeframe. Maybe I missed it, but I would love to hear how you amassed this wonderful collection of films. 🙂
