Why can Diesel engines be so polluting? Well, without wanting to make that point this 16mm film from my collection sure shows how this reputation is made possible. Loaded with great cut-away models and animated illustrations, this GM sponsored film really sells the simplicity of the down-and-dirty industrial diesel engine. As always I transferred this film with my own Telecine and color corrected where possible. Enjoy!

I didn't know there was ever a 2 stroke diesel, neat

It's a shame that 2 stroke diesels didn't really live long enough to benefit from modern advancements in technology. I have to imagine that a truly modern 2 stroke diesel would be capable of amazing performance.

"It costs less than gasoline." 🙁

    "it cost less than gasoline"
    gasoline price: 185c/L
    diesel price: 224c/L

This is a perfect explanation. Seeing all the different animations without it cutting away to someone trying to make jokes makes it easier to follow.

"Diesel it costs less than gasoline" yes it absolutely should cost less there is a greater fraction of fuel oil in crude and available at lower heat input as a by product of gasoline and petrol derived fuel gasses. Gasoline is also less power dense. Kerosene is the most power dense of common fuel oils.

Guys can't understand their innate love of diesel trucks until they actually drive one. There's just something to diesels that we're attracted to; perhaps raw power if you can get past the gear ratios.

The cutaway engine is a later model Detroit Diesel with the crosshead or two piece pistons. The piston crown and skirt are separate pieces, held together by the wrist pin. Also, the connecting rod does not have an eye on the wrist pin end, but rather a saddle, and the rod is bolted to the wrist pin with two 5/16" high tensile bolts. I worked on a fleet of trucks with these engines in the 70s, and could take them apart and put them back together in my sleep. They were also lighter than a comparable horsepower CAT or Cummins engine.

  12. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Foote says:

That cutaway engine is a Detroit 6V71.First digit(s) of the engine model denotes the number of cylinders, next is the configuration of the cylinders ( inline or v), then the engine series number, which is the individual cylinder displacement in cubic inches.

While not a popular view anymore, I'm still a big fan of diesel engines. Good job on the video.
