Lots of really great footage in this 21 minute film, complete with lab cat, transferred from my own archive print using my Eiki Telecine. The Eiki has a 5 Blade Shutter that projects a 24fps print at 30 frames per second for a flickerless NTSC transfer. At least the cat was alive.. When I was at school, we used bits of dead cat for electrostatic experiments.
I worked as a programmer for a while for a physicist friend (call them Dr Susan, because that is actually their name!) who would have the company over to her house, and give us as much beer as we wanted in their kitchen. Then they and their SO would take us down to the Texas Hold-Em table in the basement and clean our clocks. Once I was rummaging down there and found a 16mm film from Jet Propulsion Laboratory. It was all high speed photography of smoke going through wind tunnels, left over from Susan's undergraduate days. I brought the reel upstairs to the kitchen to ask them about it, and they said, "Wind tunnel porn."
So many tape drives on that computer! I'm not getting how the 6-blade shutter results in artifact-free video. At 24 frames per second, you get 144 flashes per second, which doesn't divide evenly down to the 60 or 30 video frame rate. Usually, an American telecine has a 5-blade shutter for 120 flashes to get the 60 field and 30 American video frame rate (Europe film and video is 25/50 which also doesn't compute to a 6-blade shutter). So, what's going on, exactly?

These are transistors, they are very small… watched on a device that has more transistors in it it in the space of one of those "small" transistors.
It always amazes me how clearly they explain concepts such as this in old videos. I watched a video about transistors and it was significantly easier to understand that many modern-day tutorials.
I'm a glassblower, why haven't I made one of these rigs yet?!?
