SpaceX is setting all of their satellites up in a decaying orbit, so if they ever lose control of it or any parts fall off, they'll fall into the gravity well. Hopefully all of the microsat companies do the same.
I don't think we'll ever actually colonize Mars, I think we'll just basically place an egg in a separate basket, and it'll only ever be one egg, a small research outpost that also archives the history and genome of the human race in the event of a system-level catastrophe that renders the Earth nigh-unlivable for years, decades, or more. Something maybe like a combination of the Antarctic research outpost and the seed vaults they've created deep in the mountains in Earth's most geologically-stable places.
