Great summary and discussion! Excellent points being made, I believe a lot of the problem comes down to the fact that everything is just mastered for digital and on digital now, without the considerations not just for other analog mediums, but the specifics for the cutting of vinyl such as you mentioned like Dynamic range and the tone and band limits etc. If you do a record now with LUFS at current competitive digital rates like -14dB LUFS-I , the record would be unplayable from the grooves smashing into each other from the EQ and DR and LUFS comb being so crazy. So maybe it starts with not a lot of training going into it? I've been studying Audio Engineering for over a year now and so little has been spent talking about Tape and Vinyl, which are so crucial to the whole picture. Instead, it's all about dithering and headroom and etc. which yes are super important for digital, but the nuances of analog are just never discussed, at least not yet in my courses.

remix is a scam period, it is not an original, for all intents and purposes it may as well be a cover/studio band playing..I hate re-mixed or "enhanced " versions…

It's better than old vinyl I suppose.

I have an old case of deaf coke. With a side of tinnitus. (I'll see myself out)

I dunno fran I disagree on this. I’ve bought a ton of new records and they sound great. Where are you buying from?

I was wondering why so much of 80s music is beyond trebly. Lol! … I have to say the 60s is my favorite decade for masting.

Remastered =ruined… By the way, don't buy a new copy of Van Halens first album from Walmart. They all have a defect fifteen seconds into the first song side two…

Serious music points-very well articulated, yeah for the theramin -delay noted !, seriously-u-tube vids over ten minutes-folks don't have long enough attention spans.

There is so much variability in mastering and pressing houses these days.

I have to say, my biggest issue with new vinyl releases is poor quality control.
I’ve purchased maybe near 100 post-2010 reissues and a good 50% of those have had to be returned at least once before getting a decent copy.
Everything from warping, off centre holes, visible and audible manufacturing defects on the playing surface and so on…

The worst offender so far being Tears for Fears – The Hurting which I returned so many times with problems that both Amazon and Zavvi refunded me and refused ti send any more copies!
I FINALLY found a seller on Discogs who after I explained about the issues was willing to open the record and inspect it for problems before purchase, fortunately he had a good copy so now I finally do as well!

    the trouble with trebles…

It'd be really interesting to hear your take on the recent Mobile Fidelity controversy (digitally mastered records but claiming to be analogue – and charging premium prices).

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars john grant says:

My theory too about deafness of producers over equalising records.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars David Clarke says:

I listened to a mint 80s release record of dark side of the moon and compared it to the recent remastered record and the 80s record sounded better and I wasn't happy with the current record release.
