The price of fame? Or the dilemma of funding. How did Leonardo fund his career? Some are suggesting that he wasn't an originator of some ideas, but a publisher of previously unpublished works. Stay hopeful. Humans can surprise you. I'm glad you don't sell your opinion. I'm beginning to suspect Underwriters Laboratories has gone the way of Standard and Poor's – selling bogus ratings – unless the UL logo on the overheating, made in China, plug in ground fault circuit interrupter I purchased to back up the 1970s wiring in my house was just a piece of artwork, and not an actual endorsement. Something I wouldn't put past the current crop of Chinese manufacturers.

โ€œ I didnโ€™t know about the voting poll, so I think there are a number of subscribers like me that didnโ€™t voice their preferences. I would vote to do whatever you feel about anything. Mainly I like to listen to you because you are smart/ intelligent. PS: I am interested in watching you build science stuff(color organ, theremin, guitar pedals, Dr. Frankensteinโ€™s Tesla coil.โ€

Enjoy your channel, and remain subscribed.
YOU doing what YOU want to do, is what we want to see.
There are already plenty content creators on YT that started doing what they think theire audiences "expects" from them. – And it often shows.
I think it is risky to base your content decisions on comments and polls, instead of your own "gut feeling". Especially in the fields of engineering and electronic projects, where the target audience (for larger, longer-running projects) might not be big on "community engagement" – sadly.

Fran, I am knew to Your content. I am really diggin' it so far. Consider please, that You are scheduling, pre-producing the future content that you post to the U-tubes based on a select biased viewer. Viewers who are very likely to have many common attributes. Including a propensity to navigate to your webpage, and as well as an inclination to participate in an online poll. I have done neither of those things. I however enjoy the build and tear-down content, as well as the rare specimens. Thank You for your content and all involved in producing it. Please consider Your new and future viewers when deciding what you will post.

(PS. A host capturing a happy, joyfull spirit from engaging in an activity that host truly enjoys translates to the finished video. Maybe a large percentage of viewers could be attracted to such a positive, joyful environment.)

Hello Fran… And yet, they are still there to watch your videos ๐Ÿ™‚ So… Just numbers and complicated humans behind… And yeah, YouTube tells you to go where subscribers want you to go… I can tell you, if they still there, no matter what the poll is, go for what you love to do because THIS makes what you do fantastic: you lovin' it! ๐Ÿ™‚

I think your observation of becoming a YouTube personality partially hits the mark. I think viewers are mostly looking for two things: novelty and personality. Personality comes through when you talk about stuff that you are passionate about, and if it's about something new to a viewer then it satisfies both of those viewership drivers. You also have to contend with viewer attention span. A self-contained 10 minute video on some unfamiliar artifact or personal observation is a relatively easy watch. A complicated build may be interesting, but I would guess you'd package one build into a couple of hours (total run time) split into a series of parts maybe 10-20 minutes each. That's an investment in both time and attention many viewers may not be prepared to make unless they happen to have an interest in the specific subject of the build.

A regular viewer… but drawn in by the title of this one. A great video as usual, but you had me there with the 'broad sweep' title – I was expecting some really interesting commentary (and resulting comments…) on your life philosophy. Maybe that's something for another "talk about anything" video? But patience paid off – I got something great here in the end on that subject – "I can't be bought – period." Good on ya, Fran, for that. May you "live long and prosper" fulfiling your purposes here on this channel (yes – and on this planet too). Love it – thanks and keep it up.

  9. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Vilvaran says:

Just keep up what you do now – Making complex projects results in one-of-a-kind artifacts, that you can then do a teardown on when it needs "an update"…
Making content to fit the meta feels hollow and unfulfilling…
Watching someone share their passion, feelings and progress is the reason why smaller creators are the real cornerstones of YT – otherwise it's a clickbait graveyard, with some interesting CCTV clips / dashcam footage compilations speckled about here and there…

Dear Fran, I think that the "pretty much anything, just being covered by you" option covers all the options combined and sums up the gist of your channel : you are such an interesting person, such a treasure to discover when it comes to guitar accessories and space-exploration-related stuff for example, that pretty much anything you'll make your content about, it'll be what we wanna watch, damn it! ๐Ÿ˜€

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Mike Pettengill says:

Don't listen to us! We are idiots! If you ask us BEFORE lunch we want you to hurry up and make a sandwich. You made this channel being you and doing you! Keep doing what you want and let yourself get distracted as you see fit! That is what made this work, you following your nose! Again, we are morons! We don't know what we want. We will thumbs down our favorite gladiator and then be mad when they are not there to fight next week! Dont fall for what we said, we can't do what you do, we are not you!
