Copyright dispute is over so I can now show you this 16mm reel, the rarest from my own collection - This is the original camera footage of the crew of Apollo 12 in the hangar deck of the USS Hornet on November 24, 1969. Silent and shot on Ektachrome, it has some slight light exposure from when it was originally taken out of the camera, and the odd lighting on the carrier (likely a combination of sodium and mercury vapor) has given the film an odd blue/orange color mix. All other copies of this footage that exist were taken from this very reel, which is the sole historical source for this event.

I don’t think sodium vapor lamps started appearing until the mid/late 1970s but mercury vapor would have been common by 1969 – can’t say that would have been the case on a Navy ship but it’s possible and the coloration certainly suggests it.

Fran, this is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing. So sorry, that you had to put up eith those copyright trolls. The copyright system sadly almost encourages trolls like these because there is much to gain and almost no risk for them.

Thanks, Fran! I'd never seen this. I like the smaller details, like the bakers behind that immense cake.
