Our greatest strength has always been our ability to create our own reality. It also is the cause of all of our problems. Let me explore the flexible nature of meaning..

I used to have the button. "Desperately Clinging to Utopian Illusions" right next to, "My Karma Ran over my Dogma" I remember learning from the Landmark Form (previously EST) life is empty and meaningless… You create the meaning. Most people really don't get this, I guess. Humanity is wonderful and scary all at the same time. Just remember to "subvert the dominant paradigm and eschew obfuscation. Peace Fran.

Posit a alternate perspective on reality. The totality of infinity to include all things that the human mind can and cannot comprehend to include paradox is the only consciousness we are just avatar of the infinite exploring itself from all possible variables.

I think that when you look at life from a remote perspective, us looking for a meaning to it all is just us seeking a comforting structure in the complete sandbox that is reality. I say let's us all embrace the fear of the unknown as a daily challenge! In doing so, we'll have no choice but to be more decent to one another because it does take an effort to do that and it's also somewhat scary because the outcome is uncertain. I think that it's also a great philosophy as it keeps us away from the deadliest thing to all forms of life: apathy.

And people wonder why the aliens don’t make full contact! We’re being observed, and they see idiots. We need to evolve further to the point where we understand that constantly thinking of “threats”, instead of rallying together for solutions, is where we always go wrong!

What I would contend is a very similar idea to what you're saying: empathy should guide our way forward, as a species. What I 'know' is what I experience, and what I believe is that other people have similar experiences. As such, I treat others as I would like to be treated—and that's not because of an obligation or an expectation for something in return—it's my human nature. While I don't believe in altruism, I do believe that humans have the capacity for positive social change if they can discover empathy on a mass scale.

I do not believe most people have truly tapped into what humans are capable of, in terms of empathy. A dog is empathetic; it knows when you're upset and tries to comfort you. A human should be capable of far more than that and it's incredible that we have lived for thousands of years without a majority of humans developing a 'reasonable level' of empathy. Our selfish nature is very strong, though it's what keeps all species alive. We have a difficult journey forward.

As an aside, you have fantastic content and you're a joy to watch. I wish you health and happiness!

You're right Fran, meaning of existence cannot be derived using logic. But there is another much bigger universe – of the illogical. There everything is possible, you just need to teach yourself to value it's limitlessness.

The sort of information processing that really elevates us over other animals is resolving meta-information – the information about the primary information (as from senses or whatevs); ie. context, inter-relatedness, and meaning.. but usually from the default perspective or assumption of free-will; of possessing this power of agency to effectively represent a 'first cause', in blase violation of causality itself.

The things that 'mean' something between non-sentient interacting agents are things like conservation of momentum, energy, mass, charge & spin etc. Meaning is intrinsic to the universe, in the laws of physics determining how things relate to one another, whether or not any sentients are around to appreciate them. Meaning is inherent to causality.

Similarly, realisation of the paradoxical nature of the presumption of free will doesn't support nihilism, or abrogation of responsibilities or 'the golden rule', because of the social imperative – the fact that a human grown in isolation would just be a weirded-out cactus.. a semi-sentient lump of meat 'thing'.. the social imperative is obvs central to the human condition, language, thought, culture, science.. and society must be protected against our individual excesses, hence 'my genes made me do it' isn't and shouldn't be any kind of free pass – there has to be incentives, disincentives and personal accountability.. even if we're all just complex automata.. so we should all continue pretending as if free-will is a thing, even while knowing that it's probably a bit of an indulgence.. and the same goes for our shared sense of purpose and meaning.

We're obviously riding some kind of negentropic gradient, here to process matter into energy in the attempt to make copies of ourselves that'll do the same thing more efficiently, and bottom line is that we fulfill that role much more effectively when cooperating..

The nature of "meaning" ??? What the hell ??
    Things are "intrinsically meaningless" ?
The subjective nature of meaning is why the world is as it is ?
"All we have to do is to be decent to one another"…
Ya sure, "All we need is love" ? Tell it to the Belgians in WW1, tell it to the people
of France, Poland, Russia, Finland in WW2,
tell it to the people in Pearl Harbor in 1941
tell that to the families of those lost on 9-11-2001.
"The solutions are very simple if we want to do them".
    NO, they are not.

Let me tell you something. There IS an objective reality,
and objective values centered on the most fundamental value – life.
Words like "meaning" DO have objective meaning and ultimately reference
that objective reality., irrespective of subjective perceptions of that reality.

The philosophy of a 10 year old, exclaiming "let's everyone play nice together" simply
bypasses, avoids or distorts reality into one's perception of it..
Feel "goodism" is NOT a philosophy, it's a delusion.

Peace and harmony come when the constraints as well as the advances made possible by reality are mutually observed, obeyed, harnessed.

    Stick to hacking, will ya.

How much meaning does YouTube have for you? The very definition of culture is manipulation. That's all you and everyone else is. If nothing matters, I'll use Nick Bostrom's Simulation argument—why are you wasting your time sharing anything at all? May as well not value anything, roll over and die. But you're still here, doing… Not saying this in a callous way either.

Robert Frost wrote his frenemy Edward Thomas a goofy troll when he made the decision to go to war, redux of it: All roads lead to Rome. Doesn't matter which one you're on.

    Where and what's Rome?

“I like to say that algorithms are opinions embedded in code. And that algorithms are not objective. Algorithms are optimised to some definition of success. So if you can imagine, if a commercial enterprise builds an algorithm, to their definition of success, it’s a commercial interest. It’s usually profit.” – Cathy O’Neil, data scientist

Purpose of being here is to gain knowledge (Gnosis), to build upon what we gained in a previous incarnation and move closer to a point where we no longer have to be incarnated in the flesh. But yes, our body, or flesh, along with the brain, ego, and the rest is on loan, and will pass, but within this vessel is a spiritual spark that is not of this material realm, and it came before matter, and belongs to the All, and it will return to the One and be in unity when we gain this Gnosis and use our free will to return home. Give Cesar what is his, but give me what is mine.
