A game changer or a boondoggle? We'll find out in time - but if YouTube pulls off what they are claiming to be doing it will change this platform forever.

We are going to see a lot more adds on YT soon! : (

Musician/composer here – It’s a complicated situation but keep a few things in mind. First, YT will only sign a deal with some PROs (or their equivalents), so you’ll only have access to those who sign up. Second, YT already has deals with the major PROs for those who opt in – I get YT royalties from ASCAP every quarter. Third, the major PROs really only represent the interests of the major publishers and songwriters, often at the expense of smaller songwriters/composers. Bottom line is the music royalty setup we have is built for a time long gone. We need to figure out how to hit the reset button and start over. PROs are an anachronism. The vast majority of royalties around the world are collected without PROs. For example, there’s no PRO administering the rights to intellectual property from Google and Apple and Microsoft and Samsung. There’s certainly nobody telling them what their cut of the revenues is, which is exactly what PROs do. Could you imagine a governing body telling Apple what it’s getting paid for an iPhone? Ridiculous, right? Well, that’s exactly what PROs do, and their breakdowns are weighted heavily towards the big players. But I digress…. Too complicated to fully explain here. Bottom line is if YT signs a deal there will likely be a lot of small guys screwed in the process and you still won’t have carte blanche rights to use whatever music you want.

I feel so depressed right now.

Call me cynical but I don't trust big corporations. I bet there will be a catch.

Sounds great, until people start posting a bunch of videos using the music licensed by YouTube, the copyright holdings company sees it as an opportunity, demands more money from YouTube "because now that so many videos use it, they can't say no!", YouTube refuses, and the licenses are lost. Then suddenly a bunch of videos all get claimed at once and content creators get the rug pulled out from under them, because of course it's the individual creators who will suffer for the giant corporations' feud.

How does a video of someone talking have like 20 edits per minute?

XANADU! "She, walks in, and I'm, suddenly a hero…" Sorry, you were saying something about a serious problem? I get distracted.

What's the catch? I would not underestimate Youtube's ability to screw it up.

It's ABOUT TIME that youtube is taking some action that, in the long run, will benefit the copyright holders.

Sounds like a positive move?! Thanks Fran!

YouTube will probably make a subscription that you can Pay for and then be covered by their blanket royalty rights

Despite everything, I'm still with Tom Scott here:
"YouTube's copyright system isn't broken, the world's is."

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars John Sandlin says:

This does sound like a step in the right direction. If they take a royalty cut instead of completely take your monetization, that is probably more fair.

I understand this is something ByteDance set up with TikTok out of the starting gate. I wonder if that's caused the Powers That Be to worry about TikTok eating YouTube's lunch long-term. I totally hope this does come to pass though. I'd love to see (hear?) your DJ channel!

  15. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars bf0189 says:

My friend Francois is going to be really happy. He has a complicated DJ setup and can remix songs on the fly. He has a dozen or so examples on his channel but often gets a copyright strike.
