The leap second issue has been argued about for decades. The most compelling argument I have heard is from astronomers doing very long baseline interferometry. They need a long term uninterrupted clock reference. The best example is the Event Horizon Telescope. The collected huge amounts of data from multiple radio telescopes around the world and then lined the data streams using the clocks. The thing is I don't think the general public will notice! I've talked to friends about this and most of them had no idea there was such a thing as Leap Seconds. The thing about computer clocks is latency! I have several laptops and a workstation which are all synced to the openSuse NTP server, which I believe is in Germany. If I put several devices beside each other they are not always in sync! And them my phone and my living room clock are on GPS which is not the same as NTP. So what do you go by? Back in the day there was an expression used by the BBC communications department, "It was alright leaving me!" They even had it mad into a Latin inscription.

PS I didn't realise the significance of the Snoopy. I know they had the little orange suite made out of the same material as the astronauts.

This probably isn’t the time or place, but I remember as a kid in the ‘70s (I’m about Fran’s age) we had a desktop calculator with Nixie tubes. The tubes were cool and flickered as the mic gone went about the business of calculating, but what was really cool was how if you stuck an earpiece into the 1/8th inch jack on the side, you could hear the machine make “computer” sounds. It sounded like the sounds they’d dub over computer footage on shows like the Six Million Dollar Man, aNd I always wondered what that was about. This seemed like the right place to ask. Thanks.

NASA seem to be forgetting who actually pays their bills

Hi Fran 👋 There are so many high powered telescopes pointing all over the skies nowadays … Why would you need to send craft to take images??? 🤦‍♂🤦‍♂🤦‍♂

It would be nice to have one time standard.

And Apollo 10’s Snoopy is still out there, orbiting the sun. Let’s start a go fund me to bring the LEM home!
