I don't get duped into buying the new stuff that easily. Maybe it's because I'm 50, but I'm the one with disposable income. I'm still using my Samsung Note 9 with Mint Mobile service and I pay it once a year and it comes out to $15/month. I do have my musical toys, but when it comes to cars, phones, and computers, I just won't budge. I happen to be versed in computers and will get a new/fairly new non-working laptop and fix it for myself at a fraction of the cost.
I had the Motorola Startack! I loved it! It died when I was on my bicycle and caught in a thunderstorm and I was soaked, and my bag was soaked. And my phone was soaked.
I only buy a new phone (I always buy an older model) when my old phone is broken. I now have LG V60 I am devastated that LG is not making phones anymore, but this phone is the the most amazing phone ever. All my music is on it and I can draw on it with a wacom pen. And I hope to keep this phone for many many years.
Well this was a bittersweet message that was needed to be said. I used to (and still do) look at technology with a childlike wonder as it was incredible to see what technical innovations engineers could make up next. Truly, there have been innovations that helped in medicine, safety, and education. However, our society has changed so much because of these innovations as greedy businesses only look at how much money they can suck out of us. It's amazing how we look at business people like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg, and Jeff Bezos as Gods yet they are the ones responsible for a lot of the mental health and environment problems that we have on this Earth. It's sad that they are not held accountable for the problems they've caused and they are not looking to make any atonements. I wish a lot of us tech fanboys and girls would wake up and see through the bull crap that these tech companies are giving us.
I'm in much the same position with Thinkpads with the "good' keyboard. They're still doing ok with YouTube, but I don't know how much longer the will.
I couldn't care less about phones to be honest, I just object to having to replace them.
I really hope they continue to make photographic film because being able to use my cheap old Zorki 3 camera and then develop and print myself at home, own the whole process, gives me a great deal of pleasure
My guess is that the things may change quite soon, in a yet unpredictable way. The glass cellphone will make way for something radically new. Remember what happened when the governments across the world phased out analogue television in favour of… nothing. A large share of former TV watchers did not make the switch to digital TV, at all. There were already plenty of other entertainment – social networks, online games, shows-on-demand etc. I suspect that the cycle might repeat itself, and then "the next killer thing" will pop up. Sooner than the industry thinks, much sooner.
Fran, I'm with you on that. Case in point: I attended a dinner party recently. Half of the people there had their eyes glued to their mobile phones most of the time, disengaged from the people they were with.
It seems that some of us have become so detached from reality that we are unable to objectively process and deal with the problems of the 21st century. Solutions to climate change, access to health care, social justice and gun violence seem to be always beyond our reach.

Now it is about not owning anything – why would you buy a car, a phone, an apartment, if you can lease/rent all of it for the flat rate, part of your salary probably somehow equivalent to the credit payment rates. Then you wili fight to keep your job same way as we were fighting to keep it while paying credit rates. Outside US there is a lot of economies where people just live month to month on salary, not having big chance to buy newest phones, newest cars or fancy apartments if they had not been the credit – or its modern equivalent – lease! The only difference, they will stay with nothing owned at the end, to pass their next generations.

It's not you who has changed or degraded. It's the world around us. And the young folks will, for the most part, never know the joy of chasing and catching lightning bugs as we did. I feel bad for them.

I've got a 4-year-old Xperia phone. And my carrier has informed me that it won't work after February '22. Main reason, although it supports 4G/LTE, it doesn't support VoLTE (or my carrier's flavor of it). Spent $900 for new one, although not the top-of-the-line model (which is over double that).

Honestly though I find it kinda funny how tech-savvy you are and how many cool electronics that you have, and yet you claim to not like devices. Well, modern ones at least. It seems like your taste in electronics just has a definite cut-off date of a decade-or-so ago but I wonder why that is?
Technically the phone is still going to work as a phone, even without 3G. As far as I recall there isn't any change in the GSM protocol that manages calls and text messages. You aren't going to have Internet access, that's all. I'm not even using a spartphone or an iphone and could care less about having access to mobile data. There's a reason why we have brains. The only reason I had to replace my old 11 year old phone was because I had to use 2 mobile numbers and the old one had only one sim card slot.
AT&T still markets flip phones. I have a Cingular Flip IV but they sent it to me as a free upgrade to my 3G that I had for around 10 years. So it may only be 4G, but that is all I need. That previous phone was a free upgrade too, now that I think about it (analog to digital upgrade).
I still use a 6 year old flip phone. I'm in trouble. I noticed the more advanced the phone, the fatter people are becoming. Actually I live in a rural area and I find folks here follow the three B's : Beer, Breeding, and Bullets. And a side order of tattoos as well. The dumbing of America continues.
