A long overdue follow up to my 2018 video where I made an exact reproduction of the prop used in the film Apollo 13 - this time I show and demonstrate what a real Apollo era NASA Squawk Box looked and sounded like. Extra audio treats after the credit roll too.... Enjoy!

I had to chuckle upon seeing that speaker in the movie, thinking, "Hey – someone out there has a DX-160."

Love it you always put the devices in their context. Great to hear the original sound replayed on a genuine squad box!

Do you think the director asked for a "realistic NASA speakers" and someone just looked for a realistic speaker by mistake? :))

My guess is they got a bit "creative" to avoid using the actual model where people might expect to hear John Forsythe's voice over it from the Charlie's Angels TV show. After all, that speaker on the TV show was almost one of the characters. They probably wanted something more unfamiliar looking.

Neat piece of history! Thanks for posting the whole audio track. Can't claim to understand everything they were saying — I'm not THAT familiar with the Apollo capsules. But, it was cool to hear how it actually went down, and it was fun identifying lines they used in the movie.

    Danke!
