Taking a trip in the Wayback Machine to the 1.0 Lab and a two-part project now assembled into one video. 3D printing, some very fine soldering, and breadboarding to produce a neat little piece of kit that I still use today. Enjoy!

I like to see pictures of you…but as a teenager, starting with this electronic activities!!!
That's really cool! One thing, is there a "write protect" function for the removable media, like we had on cassette tapes or on SD cards?
Neat, sounds good. Electrical engingeering is an interesting mystery to me.
What is the point of having 10-20 seconds recorder?
Fran really rocks !!!!
I got some of those audio chips a while ago, I hooked one to the front door bell. It plays Caleb from the American Gothic TV series saying, "Someone's at the door".
I miss cartridges. Closest modern equivalent (for most of us, anyway) is an SD card, and those don't have the ka-chunk of ye olde cartridges.
Keying is ALWAYS a good idea. Because even if you built it yourself, even if the only person that will EVER touch it is you, there will always be a time when you mess up. Perhaps you're trying to do something in a hurry – be it a real hurry (get something done by the end of the day) or a self-imposed deadline (I want to get this done before getting dinner ready) there is always the possibility of hurrying to the point where you mess up. You know, something about inviting Murphy over. One day you're trying to do something in less than ideal conditions, you think you see your mark, you plug it in, and poof you let the magic smoke out. So yes, even if the only person to touch something is me, there will be opportunities to screw up.
you rock Fran
One of my favorite projects of yours! I got a bunch of that audio recording board and was actually going to make one myself, but haven't gotten around to it. I was also going to add a potentiometer to change the clock so you could do voice effects like "munchkin" and "dark lord".
With an actual pcb instead of perfboard and some careful measuring, I bet the physical size could be reduced to make it a better pocket size fit. I think I would make a slot in the side to hold the cartridge in a safer position instead of perpendicular to the case to avoid the possibility of damage. Just leave enough sticking out to grab onto. Neat little project.
very cool, it definatley could be a product, google "voice box w7893" i found one of these some years ago, only difference is you change the speed of the recording with the dial, gives it more replay value so to speak. Maybe making cartriges that gives you different effects would put yours over the top! I thought it was just a cheap piece of plastic but after doing 3d printing myself i have more appreciation for simple plastic designs, the voice box being pretty elegant compared to what im even able to come up with.
The video could use some decombing. I'm sensitive to stacked fields.
at first I thought you had the gummy hand link from Quantum Leap! 🙂 I don'y know why, but I'd be doing "Toy Story" lines on it!
I imagine you couldn't find a connector because they didn't design for one – I think they were just meant to be soldered to another board, perhaps, so they just went for a minimum size that's still easily soldered by hand…?
Those headers being in mils explains why they are 2.54mm to everyone else, instead of a round 2.5 🙂
I wonder if those chips are still available, what would one screech for ?
