Tons of old cabinets and shelving units tossed out curb side if you keep your eyes open. I plethora of free wood for shop projects.

Fran, perhaps you didn't think of it at the time, usualy we use spacer blocks or a thin mdf rectangular piece square on all sides of course so you only measure once and use the spacers for assembly. Works great for any job that requires accuracy and repeatability. Cheers ๐Ÿ˜‰

I had an old and flimsy bookshelf that was falling apart. The rounded front trim had all come loose, and the shelf wobbled side to side. I needed storage for DVDs and Blurays, and it ALMOST filled out the space at the end of a hallway… The shelf left a 5.5 inch gap between it and the door frame beside it. I found some cheap bits of shelving with integrated round trim on the front edge, and some flat shelving panels the same color as the shelf, all on clearance. I wasn't so concerned about screw visibility, since the shelf's outsides would be facing walls, but I replaced all the shelf holding pegs with pre-drilled holes and screws. I also screwed the back board to the shelves. That made it exceptionally rigid. The small shelf bits, I cut into 5.5 inch wide segments, and screwed to the outside of the shelf, creating a small bit of extra storage on the space between the outside edge of the shelf and the wall next to the door frame. Inside the shelf, I measured the height of my DVDs and Blurays and packed the shelves in so I had a finger height's worth of gap above the disc cases (to grab them by), and packed in the maximum number of shelves possible.

    That shelf turned out GREAT!

You have created an annoying little wasted corner. I have a couple like that in my office

Use a key-hole router bit and hang the shelf on the wall with a couple of screws using the vertical ends; then, you can still access the full desk space!

You might want to consider putting a thin back sheet on it to maintain structural stability. Not strictly speaking necessary just an added insurance.
