My first Heathkit was a kit (integrated amplifier) that someone else built and I had to disassemble and rebuild . It was probably 20 years old at that point. I also remember building Radio shack analog meters back in the day
hahaha glad to know im not the only person who uses the term 'cool beans'!
Don't know if anyone's mentioned this ahead of my comment but the State of Connecticut is looking for Cobol programmers. That's how old some of the state's computer systems are. Up until a few years ago, CT's DMV system ran on Cobol. What a mess migrating the old system to a new one. There are still Cobol systems in other departments. Their programmers are retired or have died, so the state actually started a Cobol training program to keep things going. This is what happens when execs kick big budget items they don't want to buy on their watch down the road…over and over again. Same goes for businesses. Budgetary procrastination is both a government and business equal opportunity situation.
Re: Steve Allen and Jayne Meadows ( the coolest, cultural couple of the 20th Century), it's amazing how accurate and prescient their script was in the cassette. Thank you for playing that, Fran!
Arnold Friedman the author had a movie made about him in 2003 "Capturing the Friedmans"
As for the 15-pin edge connector board that came with the LEVEL-UP book, I have a few very similar (almost identical) looking boards, but mine came out of a Wang Laboratories inc digital text editor used by a newspaper, the cards contain a variety of logic elements, like inverters, flip-flops and gates. The transistors on my boards are made by RCA, but the tops of the transistors are so much oxidised that except for the RCA logo in their centres I can't really read any inscription on them. I rescued these boards from a dumpster I think it must have been in around 1975.

BASIC is actually short for "Basic Fortran". Except BASIC is interpreted and Fortran is compiled.. and more structured. But same commands and syntax
