Another film from my archive - this reel is dated 1963 in the title but clearly was re-released in 1965 as it also contains footage of Ed White's Gemini 4 spacewalk - but so what... It's for the kids! This film is very typical of the kinds of releases of NASA material that were made for middle schools. The film has lost most all of its cyan but is still a gem of the time. As usual I transferred this reel with my own Telecine and adjusted color to taste. Enjoy!

While technically correct as a "space ship" this is literally a beer can glued to the top of an ICBM
I love the presentation of it being "A" Space Flight, and not "One of the first and few ever" though back then my understanding is, the thought was these programs, Apollo, would not be cut so quickly. Great film and still inspiring.. This type of content being produced by the government is even more a thing of the past sadly. Thanks Fran
Another beautiful telecine. Watching this gives us insight of how people viewed spaceflight in those days where 100 miles altitude felt as distance as Pluto, and everything is very mysterious. Which why the Twilight Zone episode of a Mercury astronaut returns to an earth different than the one he left (in this other "earth" his house has a picket fence, he is a full bird Colonel, and his daughter doesn't recognize him). These days such a story would never work, it would need a much more creative and distant plot and lots of snazzle special effects.
Being a baby boomer the space program was exciting as was the launch of new satellites. Thanks for preserving these old NASA films. I can almost hear the projector clicking away in the background .
A SPACE FLIGHT

That before and after comparison at the end gives great insight into how what you are doing is tremendously more than simply transferring from analog to digital
Thank you Fran for all you do
Silver was the color of space
I'm so glad you are preserving these films before they get too far degraded. And thank you for sharing them.
Amazing how advanced science was back in the 60's !
I remember when the teacher would roll in the big TV and plug it in so we could watch films like this in Junior HS Science class. Some of the kids still didnโt have televisions at home. Color was still a novelty too. It was a wondrously time to grow up. It seemed like opportunities were endless and you could do anything or be anybody you wanted to.
Gone are the days of calm, educational videos that make the kids wonder about what they've seen. Nowdays it's all about rabid camera movements, loud sounds. We are already paying for such neglect and it will only get worse.
