I must have missed something. These films themselves were copyright when made, visual and music and text all, and surely that still applies?
The same way published books are still under copyright back to nearly WW1?
YouTube has gone down the same rabbit hole as rock music, professional sports and anything else that smells like money. When it changes from just doing or making something for joy to doing or making something for money it all gets stupid complicated.
I recently watched a video by Pewdiepie where he basically said that YouTube's content ID is broken and gave examples showing that his own music in some of his videos was copyright claimed by some organization that claimed it on behalf of Pewdiepie. Pewdiepie said that he never wanted his music claimed by anyone including himself because he wanted others to use it. When he tried to appeal it, the copyright troll denied his appeal.
If the problem is just that the trolls are stealing your monetization, can you set a Patreon funding target where you just stop caring about the youtube money for these, and leave the videos unedited (and mirrored to the Internet Archive)? So long as you're just getting ContentID claims and not actual strikes, maybe it'd be better to lean on patron support harder and just let this fight go, in the interest of saving these for posterity.
Or at least once the initial revenue spike decreases from an edited upload, send the unedited version to IA.
Fran, too bad you can't make fair use, even though it is copyrighted. You had the original film so you ought to be able to upload. Hi Fran, I lost my sense of smell with Covid and my advice is do not despair, it can take a couple of weeks to come back, a couple of months or 6 months to a year. I'm 6 months in and it is basically back as it was before, just been a gradual improvement with several noticeable step changes and those are lovely days, you appreciate something a lot more after it's been gone a while. One thing they say helps speed things up is Vitamin A nasal drops so might be worth a Google to investigate that. Good luck with the move.
Holy shit! YouTube Copyright is broken beyond repair. I‘m on the board of an independent label and I will suggest to pull our catalog from content ID asap. That’s just fucked up. Not worth the few bucks we earn from ContentID.
It's such a shame. These films are historic records and how are we ever going to see them if people copyright strike them? You're doing an amazing thing by sharing these films for everyone to see. I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed that all your troubles will be sorted out asap. X

That's a Commodore 1702 monitor above the top of your head that was solid enough for commercial use, and we used it in the 80's at WBZ-TV Boston when I was an intern there. It was the preview monitor for the chyron (character generator). Very well engineered.
