Hi Fran, I’m really sorry about the move. The whole thing really sucks. I just wish you could relocate across the pond to the UK. Plenty of Good buildings here and we would enjoy having you as an honorary Brit. I hope the whole thing gets sorted soon. David

It's just disgusting what developers are getting way with, would of thought that there would be laws that would halt demolition while you are still in the building forcing them to either wait or buy out your lease. Just know that everyone on your channel are here for you. Your awesome Fran.
Nearly 35k out of a 10k goal. You might want to see about buying a small build-able plot you can put an insulated and climate controlled steel shed on with that kind of cash. Could potentially have something you actually own and do work out of that they can't knock down or evict you from. As apposed to mere storage at some rented facility.

G'day, Fran! I am very happy for you! Congratulations on "Finding A New Home!" You know, there are longtime tenants from San Francisco to Harlem, who have made their homes for generations in Brooklyn neighborhoods are scattering, muscled out by surging rents and, tenant advocates say, landlords who harass tenants, withhold repairs or use evictions to make room for higher-income renters.
The people arriving in Crown Heights today are fleeing high rents in Manhattan and elsewhere in Brooklyn. Likewise, the people leaving Crown Heights often go farther east into Brooklyn in search of affordable homes, most commonly to East Flatbush, Canarsie and East New York.
The monthly rent on Ms. Shirley De Matas’s two-bedroom apartment at 1170 Lincoln Place was $800 in 1999, when she, her husband and their three children moved in. By 2014, it had risen to nearly $1,300, a sum that forced Ms. De Matas, a fabulous seamstress, and her husband, a mechanic, to skimp on everything.
Compounding the strain were the pipes, which regularly burst in the winter. And the mice. And the rat that died in the wall, decaying until its stench pervaded the apartment. And the superintendent who, they said, did little to help.
Tenant advocates and lawyers believe that landlords in gentrifying areas like Crown Heights often withhold repairs or basic services from lower-paying tenants, hoping they will get frustrated enough to leave, then pack the apartments with higher-paying ones.
These pre-war apartments, with glossy new kitchens replacing tired old ones. Limestone fixer-uppers are commanding seven-figure prices. Cocktail bars are opening where fried chicken used to be sold from, behind bulletproof glass. And, the New Yorkers who lived there are drifting away, their former homes renovated to make way for white college graduates and younger families.
By the way, I honestly believe, your persistence will pay off!

Fran, moving is a pain..I know first hand…I've had to move 11 times since leaving Detroit in 2003. You will be fine. Positive thoughts help…do not let this get you down. BTW, 3 kids a wife 2 ferrets and a dog came with on every move. You'll be settled in no time and you may even like it better. It gets better. Wishing you peace.

Yeah…. I've been sitting on my current rental house for the past 25 years. ~50-year old 3-bedroom two-story split-level with basement (which effectively gives two more rooms plus a large space for laundry and whatnot), but only one bathroom. The roof leaks (I go through a lot of roof patch), I've replaced some of the plumbing, and the electrical is outdated, but because the property is SUPPOSED to eventually go for development, the landlord doesn't want to put any money into it. The only reason we've survived the last few landlords, who were all basically "speculating" on the property, is so that they make the $850/mo I pay in rent and they don't have to pay speculator's tax. And quite frankly, the only reason the rent has stayed so low is because we've always done our own repairs. We're basically just keeping it occupied until it eventually goes for development… As we've been doing the past 25 years.
Eventually, I will have to move, and with the current rental prices being what they are, I'm not looking forward to it. $850/mo these days gets you a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment in the old suburbs with very little space to store anything. What I currently have now can easily go for between $2500-3000/mo! My only saving grace at the moment is that nobody wants to pay what the landlord is asking for it, so we could be here another 10 years, or we could be gone next year, nobody knows.
And I've got a fair bit of stuff myself, and not all of it is junk (though there's a bunch of it can be safely tossed). I run a small landscaping business now (electronics and computers for my hobbies), and I need the associated space for storing my truck/trailer and all my equipment. I only started up a few years ago, so I'm not ready to BUY a property just yet…
Long story short, I haven't been evicted YET, but I'm familiar with the type of anxiety, and the frustration of developers tearing down old properties so that they can build new ones and charge outrageous prices for the rental.
