Just a thought about carbon filtering. Many years ago when I worked at That Fish Place / That Pet Place. I had a problem at my apartment in the basement, with odor due to a backed up drain pipe month before and the smell was still in the room. So I bought a 12 X 12 square carbon filter pad designed for aquarium filters and placed in on the front of my dehumidifier output side with zip ties or twist wire. That did remove the bad odor. So my thought for your air cleaners is to buy the general air filter and put a carbon type filter on the output side and change that carbon filter as often as you need. I just found you can buy a 16" X 45" pad at Walmart for $9.91. I wonder if the tight filtering and the carbon are getting the media clogged, making something as little as lack of air flow allowing the filter to grow mold or something of that sort.

People in the past used vinegar as an antibiotic. Ask the British.

I experience the same sour smell from my activated carbon filters – about 2 weeks after installation. In my lab I use a lot of rubbing alcohol to clean resin printed parts. I too would like to understand what is causing this smell…
