Back to the bench for another adventure - this time to explore my 2000 Microsoft Optical wheel mouse (and a few others). Enjoy!

I think the camera lens is allowed to move so the soldering alignment of the camera is not critical. The shape of the bump on the camera and the socket on the lens will self align when the mouse is assembled. I have some recent Dell mice that are very similar in shape and have a clickable roller as well.
I have a few of this same mouse, still working! They just don't build them like this anymore! I believe either Mouse Systems or Logitech made an actual laser mouse back in the 80s that used a special metal mouse pad with a pattern etched in to it…
They should have made them out of acid-free plastic maybe, …
I have one of these same mice, mouse, mouses? They were great for their time, and even now. But I’ve switched to laser mice since they work on more surfaces. I like these teardown videos.
I used to have a 5 button version of the original intellemouse. It was my favorite mouse as well. It died in the same way as yours, lasted about 15 years of heavy use. After going through several different mice, my hand has landed on a full sized Razer Deathadder. Good size and the buttons are wide and squared off. A bit pricey, but would recommend.
Looks like the footprint allows to replace the switch with the one used in modern mouses if the height of the button allows it._
Yep I like the old style mice. The ones that drive me mad now are the modern Mac ones, actually most Mac stuff does.
We were so sad in highschool we could no longer steal the mouse balls in the library and computer lab! Our practical jokes had to move elsewhere when all mice were made without balls😥
I bought one of those Microsoft optical mouse too, I too like the way it worked and felt in your hand. If your adventuresome, you could find replacement switches to fix the left button.
Did you intend to leave out the one part?
I still have mine. It still works.
I love these mice more than any other. I had a 1.1a (dark grey) version for many years until it’s left button died also. I tried to scour ebay for a replacement second-user one, and they were about £20 – £25. Then I hit on an auction for THIRTY of them, and the bidding was at £26. I bid £28 and forgot about it for a week, and then, to my surprise I won! 30 hardly used Microsoft Intellimouse’s’s’s for £28. Less than a pound each. 😊.. Over the years I’ve sold 25 of them to my clients at £9 each, over £200 profit, and I kept five for myself. They are all still perfect. For me there is no better mouse. It’s perfectly shaped, exactly as you say, the response of buttons and movement is superb and they are mighty durable. Fab video as always Fran, great to see inside one! Thanks for another great video.
Yep, they just nailed that design. Only improvement has been wiresless.
Fran, take the guts out of a modern mouse and 3D print a new body to the specs you'd like. I'm currently in the process of doing this to recreate a Logitech Trackman FX from an Amazon Basics laser mouse and an 8-ball.
Interesting teardown. I'm using a Microsoft Basic Optical mouse v2.0 in its PS/2 mode as I have a KVM that only accepts PS/2 keyboard and mice.
Our cat attacked the one I was using a few months ago and chewed the cord. On mine the thumbwheels fail and eventually the outer coating tends to crack. I saved a previous dead one and was able to swap the cable.
