Is ie really just silk screen? From an angle it looks etched then filled with resin, which would explain why it's glass.

Oh crap I think it is simply a very elaborate indicator lamp!
I think that is a relay to activate the indicator light on the face. It isn't a mechanical switch. It's an indicator. Think about what was printed on the glass. It's just telling you of a successful launch.
