This girl is not so bright sometimes!! Split the boards first! Solder the annunciator on the correct side!!
On wish about a couple years ago I bought an almost identical kit only difference I can tell is the color of the circuit board displays and you didn’t make light pipe just it wasn’t identical in functionality but it was close all the switches were on the front was like $10. The instructions were a schematic and that’s it. No instructions like that heath kit.
The very first job I did was to split the boards! Only took seconds and with no risk to damaging a populated board! Also, Fran has mounted the annunciator ( speaker) on the wrong side of her board !
Built one of these this week together with a teenager before finding your videos, and I am not sure which was worse – the incompletely scored PCB that the manual asks you to break after you've already installed many components (I also used a chisel!), the white PCB where you can't see the circuits (limits learning from the design), the black heat sink for which the manual asks you to start by prying off the soldered pieces (!), the extra resistors, the inconsistency about where the solder plates are on the top side of the board, the fiddly little ribbon cable where once you tin the leads they are then too large to fit through the tiny holes on the PCB, having to line up the light tubes… still fun, but not the HeathKit I remember from being a kid.
“I just want this to be done!” isn’t the kind of phrase I remember being in Fran’s repertoire 🙂
Well, thanks for giving me an abundance of reasons not to support the new Heathkit stuff… Loose fiberglass is the clincher. That stuff is a major hazard, including a respiratory hazard… not suitable for teaching electronics to kids (or anyone, really), which… admittedly is only one reason why they used to be good stuff, but still… yeah, no! :-/ Sorry you had to learn the hard way, and thank you for sharing the lesson.

Just take a knife and score it more. Also better for the solderjoints

the real measurement of 1/3 inch is 0.3333333333333333333333 inch
as far a grounding. I guess nobody does that much anymore. You are a genius to me
You are doing the best you can with what you've got. I have seen a circuit board on a balance machine for aircraft instruments that were built to that level. They put the active devices( dual op amps) were put in the circuit board backwards
