Just released from copyright jail, this 16mm film from my collection is actually a Kinescope - a film shot off a video monitor - and complete with absolutely state-of-the-art Vidifont electronic titles. Dean Dixon conducts his Orchestra in a special educational concert for students the describes and demonstrates the basic terms of music composition and demonstrates the fundamental components of a musical piece and various methods of playing on the various instruments to construct a symphony. As always I transferred this film with my own Telecine. Enjoy!

A Gentleman Dean Dixon was.
Only a few can attempt to fill his shoes.
Back to school. I realize how much Iโve โforgottenโ since the 80โs. I play regularly, but donโt see some of these terms.
Nice French horn playing. Kinda rare in my area.
Quality content on Public TV, more so than todayโs junk.
Thanks Fran.
i so heart this super hard. thanks you!
That was SPLENDID! Thanks so much!
wonderful..please don't tell me this got a claim on Row, Row, Row Your Boat?
Educational & entertaining… thank you Fran.
Tremelo fascinated me as a kid in the 70s, because some older guys in the family were always talking about it for their electric guitar, and trying to make a tremelo 'thing' (think it was partly mechano-accoustic). It was double fascinating since it is also a town in Belgium. ๐
Not to be funny, I thought the conductor was Bill Cosby….. ๐ .
An excellent ๐๏ธfilm ๐
Music theory was a bitch!
Brilliant! I think some of the questions would have been easier to answer if I weren't actually listening and enjoying the music, as I played violin for years in school and have that info stuffed away in the dustier nooks of my brain somewhere anyway. ๐คฃ As usual, watching this performance has made me want to go and get my violin from my parents' house and start playing again. Thanks for preserving this gem, Fran! ๐
Isn't the Vidifont machine what they first used for text overlay on the Super Bowl? Must have been a very well-connected university there!
Seeing what seems to be an all white orchestra being led by a professional, well spoken person of color in 1972 is probably the most remarkable aspect of this video. I hadn't heard of Dixon before, but he must have been one hell of a role model for black kids who thought it was good to play violin regardless of what their classmates thought.
I came from being a brass player in band. Even with that knowledge, the quiz questions were pretty hard.
Color correction= grayscale. DONE!
That was hilarious! Love classical music! Took me until now to know all these musical terms, Thanks Fran
Encore! Thank you Fran ๐
Great introduction to orchestral articulations. Thanks for uploading.
fantastic,,,love you and who you are
Bravissimo!
