Another route for latency free recordings are the Apollo interfaces with dsp, record right into any daw

I don't use spinning hard disk drives anymore. The bearings lock up. Now I use solid state drives.

You might look at the Disk Management and mimic the 80G setup onto the 500G as maybe the partition, file system and folder structure need to be in place on the new HD for the Tascam device to function. Else maybe there’s a way to use the Tascam device to set up the new HD.

Looks like you are on Win 10/11.
Thats one of those OS that hide files from you.
To be sure you should check it from the C:/ prompt. Or alternately there is a windows explorer option to show all hidden files.
The same is true on MacOS. You have to do a bash prompt thing like defaultswrite showinvisible = true or somesuch foolishness.

Glad you finally heard back about the Petty tracks. Personally, I thought the waiting was the hardest part. 😁

The newer sata drive uses 2k blocks, the older drive is 512b blocks. Given the low level access happening I don't think it's going to work, unless MAYBE if you bit-by-bit clone the old drive over using DD or clonezilla on linux.

I do not know if you can find a usable Sector Editor to actually look at each track's sector. I am sure you can and look within the drive and find all kinds of data. I also assume the ' .tmp ' files are how it records where start and stops of each audio is kept
as there is a similar method for DVR recordings. I stumbled on to that for DVRs when I got a few for free that still had drives in them and the drives looked blank in Windows/Linux but a sector editor showed that there was some shows recorded. The temporary files (.tmp ) had some hex and text to indicate tv shows and date/time of when they aired. So I wiped them and they sill worked just fine for backing up data. Free is always a good price for 500gig ( 470gig usable after the format and sector scans ).
