Oh The Humanity!!! We've all had this happen. You've got a device that goes dead so you go to change the batteries and Whammo! Why does this happen and what to do about it? I will delve into these and other questions as I explore the wild world of alkaline batteries. Enjoy!

I am curious if FREEZING batteries extens their life or is there any negative effects of freezing batteries? Anyone know?
Thanks

So how do you clean the mess? Is it safe to just throw them to the garbage? Im afraid of touching it.
I have experience with Mitsubishi heavy fuel oil purfier centrifuges, lube oil ones, and a Mitsubishi marine boiler that stood 3 stories tall.
They make a huge variety of high quality gear.
The GP batteries are zinc chloride which are low self drain.
I was gifted a Mac Plus in perfect working order ( I still had the original mac write/draw/paint floppies from way back) turned it on one day and just got a chessboard pattern on the screen, opened it up, and an internal battery had leaked and eaten away a big chunk of the pcb. I was gutted! so was the mac!
I used to be a Duracell fan but nowadays, after having duracell's leaking before their expiration and before they're even dead. I will never buy another Duracell battery again. Seems to me if you pay a premium price for a battery you should get premium quality. but not in a Duracell
If it's not an alkaline battery you can be sure that it is NOT a lead/acid battery, it is almost certainly a carbon/zinc battery. They were all called "dry cell" batteries, lead/acid batteries have liquid acid in them. (Car batteries are probably the most common lead/acid battery that the general public will be familiar with.
WARNING: Do not get that liquid on your fingers. I was picking up a battery and the liquid got on my fingers by accident. I immediately washed it off but now I have some type of chronic dermatitis that I can't get rid of. I have tried every ointment and cream on the market but my skin constantly flakes off revealing the lower layers. Even the doctors don't have an answer. And it only appears on the fingers that actually touched the battery. I believe the chemicals oozing out of the battery cause some type of permanent damage to the skin DNA which prevents it from growing normally and protecting the lower skin layers. I've had this for almost a year now and it won't go away. Always use surgical gloves or a a pair of pliers when picking up a battery which is leaking and dispose of responsibly.
thats why I use lithium or recharbeable batteries
I hate when it happens. It ruins my battery terminals. Some of them i could not even replace.
Have you ever had the old jpl or nasa batteries?
I've lost way more equipment to Energizers, but in the last two decades, in-package Duracells have self-destructed after 1/5 "warranty" time — maybe bean-counters took over?
Perhaps the momentary kermit button-press charged a capacitor enough for a whole phrase and some state retention?
I will no longer use alkaline cells, they all leak. I only use re-chargeable now. Iโve had too many devices ruined, the last straw was an Apple keyboard.
I've had Duracell batteries that are 9 years old and still going. Energiser are my favourite batteries too. Good video.
Standby probably actually helped the extended battery life.
Hey Fran! I, as an Electrician and Car-Mechanic LOVE your videos. But I do have a question. Is (just) an open switch really an "active on" connection? It could just be the battery in it's packaging.. or is it about the different materials touching?
