Spanning years and projects I give you a stream of diode consciousness, from my deep proof of concept 7-segment display driver made entirely of diodes, to a one-of-a-kind vintage Dialco neon 7-segment display demonstrator, to some incandescent 7-segments that you've seen in every 80's and 90's era sci-fi movie (trust me!). So get your snacks and kick back and enjoy!

Something tells me FRAN used to be a DAN…

    Very nice 👍👍

Nice, SPDA – solder programmable diode array – that throws me back to my earliest childhood electronics experiments. I made a traffic light matrix for a fairly complex road crossing with pedestrian lights for my model railroad and the brand new mini LEDs.

Nice to see real logic instead of CPU based waste 😊
I imagine a one way valve when I see a diode symbol.
Looks much like many of my prototype PC B's, great work.
Used the 4017 and diodes fur all manner of things from knight rider / centurion lights to BCD counters.
Even built my first digital clock using mes 2V bulbs with BC107's as drivers in balsa and cardboard 7 segment displays.
As a teen in the70's LED 's let alone 7 seg displays were price prohibitive.
I wager that you as I would have given anything for a box of LED displays like that in the 70's

My Kitchenaid dishwasher uses diode steering for selecting the various cycles and options from a control strip of embedded pushbutton snap switches and diodes. The control strip is unrepairable and unavailable unless a working used one can be found and purchased which I have just done even though it was quite expensive. If the control strip malfunctions again, and the dishwasher still works otherwise, I will have to recreate the control strip from a keypad and diodes or keypad and Arduino.

Isn't this also called mickey mouse logic?
I remember having played around with 7-seg decoding, using diodes and cmos chips, back in school. I still use simple diode logic from time to time.

Yeah Fran, your work surface is starting to look like mine, you better watch out LOL. Love you, love your videos, keep it up!

Yeah In electrical engineering classes, you are taught to use conventional current. Franklin had a 50-50% chance. Unfortunately, he picked the wrong one. But for most electrical engineering it is taught. You use the conventional current version.

You are using too many diodes to build 7seg coder circuit. I think 20..21 diodes will be enough. Transistors are also not needed if the brightness of the indicator is not important.

You are so nice. Thanks you so much for your videos.

It looks like this could be extended to be a hexadecimal display? Maybe by just adding additional states in the columns of diodes?

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Rony B Chandran says:

Those projection types should be called display HARD-WAYers (with respect) 🙂

Yeah Fran, you just gotta love all the vintage audio and tech 'aficionados' chomping at the bit to convert every incandescent bulb to LED…the sad thing is they genuinely believe they're making an improvement

Is the page on 555s called something like talking electronics ?

    Lovely stuff.
