Oh Joy! In this video I take a trip to the past with something new - the Elenco Electronic Playground 130 project kit that is definitely in the form and spirit of the classic Science Fair 150-In-1 kit that I had as a kid. I do a side by side comparison of the features of both kits, and give the Elenco 130 a try by doing a simple project. Enjoy!

Hi Fran, just came across your channel. I don't know if you can point me in the right direction but, I am someone who knows nothing about electronics. Currently, I am a ham radio operator and would love to learn more about the internal parts of the radio. You can read all the material you want but, putting the action into learning is better for me. Is there a kit you can recommend that may help in my learning adventure. It is hard to find a kit that would help me learn about the integal parts of ham radio. Thank you for sharing Fran.

My biggest problem with the Elenco is it does not go into much detail about the how and why of things. Just have you swap out a component and says this will happen.

I have bought the 40 in 1 electro magnetic kit science fair NEW and the connections are tarnished. I suspect even the wires… what do I do, Please help. Beautiful, spanking new and doesn't work. I tried 1 lamp with new wires and barely worked. So I know the components work, just 50 years old thats all…

I got that same model Science Fair as an xmas prezzie when I was around 10. One of my best memories along with a chemistry kit. Turns out I'm more right-brained or whatever, but I loved playing with those things.

The green wires are for the antenna and the ground for the radio projects, Ms. “I like the oscillator projects the best.” 😂

So cool to see your enthusiasm for these electronics kits. I was a high school chemistry / physics teacher in Chicago for 7 years ending in 2014. Our school had a robotics team, and I was the faculty advisor. The hands on work the student did inspired more of the team members to go to engineering school than any class. Nice work, thank you.

That $29.95 RadioShack price tag is probably worth $30 now.

I received the 150-in-1 kit for Christmas in 80. was the best

Is this lab still on the market

I have that exact 150-in-1 kit! I got it as a hand-me-down from my cousin. 🙂 I already had the (very similar, but slightly updated) 160-in-1 kit that I got in the 80's (brand-new), and I remember doing some larger projects by combining the two. I'm glad that someone is making similar kits again.

I'm 67, I had a 100 in one Knight kit, back in the 60s and It came with a tube and 3 transistors! Lots of fun. I also built some kits, walkie talkie, radio, etc. I also built a digi-comp, an early mechancial computer. I had one of the kits you had in the vid in my classroom for awhile(schoolteacher). Not that many kids liked to play with it, but some did, so I kept it around and eventualy gave it to a student. I still keep a box with some soloar cells, aVOM, some chargable batteries, small motors and the like. Some kids still like that sort of thing, kind of heartening. Love the channel, thanks for all your work!

Fran for circuit ideas when I started to teach myself after I got my A.A.S. in Electronics Technology in which they taught us mostly vacuum tubes which I use now but at that time in 1971 thats not what I needed. So I got a breadboard and all t=he John Markus Circuit Books ( 4 of them the size of a Chicago Telephone directory and they weren't that cheap abt $35 each or more) and I started to teach myself digital electronics PLUS every audio construction book, magazine I could find National Semi and Analog devices, Motorola, Fairchild, taught me alot of analog stuff; phono stages, op amps and Thank GOD for samples. So I designed and built a digital clock learned abt divide by 6/12 ckts, and IC bypass caps (those nasty glitches). So I've been building my Stereo Preamp for 50 years so many prototypes. I had as a child the Remco Science kits, Crystal Radio kits, the Philmore crystal radio, the Rocket, and some neat one transistor radio that was on a plastic base many nights hearing WCKY, WSB, WLAC rodneys record shop? The best kit I got was the Knight Kit 100 in One kit. WOW what a great kit, wish I still had them someone stole them. All hail the Slide Rule Post Versalog! Really like the channel.

I had the Philips/ Norelco Electronics Education kit when I grew up in the 60s, but also played with the neighbor’s Radio Shack kit similar to yours hours of fun. I learned my resistor color code and got me started in my electronics career.
