An amazing book sent in by viewer Alex: Micro-Electronic Packaging, Interconnection and Assembly of Integrated Circuits by George Sideris (who was editor of Electro-Technology Magazine) published in 1968 - Shows exactly how all of those multilayered IBM PCB's (like the System 360 and Saturn V LVDC boards) were made, and all the minutia of the processes of packaging and routing integrated circuits in the mid-1960's. Every page is a treasure, so I put the whole thing up here in 30 seconds.

You also got the info in the old RCA, Motorola and National data books, where they showed off the bare dies they sold for hybrid use, and also the dies with lead bars attached to reflow onto substrates for use in hybrids where you did not weant to use bond wires.

I like the old books. I have one title Microminiaturization of Electronic Assemblies 1958, Chapter 1 starts off, Fine-Line etched Wiring and the last chapter Molecular Electronics a major advance in microcircuitry.

That type of electronic engineering philosophy was so important for future signaling and data transmission. I would have been thrilled to be in my garage inventing new materials to house new microelectronics.
