Okay - I already know what I have to do, but here is a little video of how I got the drive out for the Petty estate. Some more work to be done getting the Tascam back online, but no big whoop. Enjoy!

Wow, so this Multi-track machine belonged to Tom Petty? Did he just Record Demo Stuff on it? I had a Korg D-3200 multi-track machine and all it was really good for was making Demos/Pre-production stuff. I never understood what I was missing out on until I started recording in the box using Cubase. Went from all the multi-track machine limitations to limitless DAW super Professional recording Productions.

Good on you for doing the right thing by the artist's Estate. You could have easily just flogged it for a few quid online and the lawyers would not have had much recourse in this case.

This should be national news I'm my opinion. Archaeology meets musicology meets technology meets popular culture meets metaphysical breakthrough of Tom breaking through The Veil

Why not just back up the Petty multitracks to an optical disc?

The HDD is formatted into multiple partitions.. to rebuild the. HDD .. with the power off.. press and hold SHIFT & QUICK ROUTING. Then turn the power on . When complete it will say "FACTORY INITIALIZE COMPLETE" "PLEASE POWER OFF"..

then you should have a blank console.

If that truly has Tom Petty work on it then you need to contact gone Gator music Tallahassee Florida

Everyone [many people] is assuming it is a DOS-formatted HD. That is very unlikely, as it could be just about any sort of proprietary format and or disk layout topology…
Never assume anything. Even attempting to read or copy this drive incorrectly could damage the recorded material irreparably.

If all else fails, there is an ATA command for 'set max LBA sectors'. I would have to go look for my notes, in case a search for the actual utility and command isn't fruitful.

    a) Buy a "real" IDE HDD (500GB they're very cheap today). Some Hardware do not work with adapter.
    b) Clone the "old/original" HDD to new IDE using Clonezilla or similar on PC.
    c) Install the "new" HDD .

if you do a disk clone from the old drive to the new 500gb drive it may boot up. you can then format the new drive and start over and the original drive is unharmed….have you reached out to Tom petty's Daughter??

Great unit! I had one loved it!

I would use Parted Magic to duplicate the original PATA (IDE) drive's partition to the new SATA drive then see if you can boot up the new drive and remove the recordings from it, if it doesn't boot, you will likely need to find a PATA drive to duplicate it too. At any rate, there may be proprietary software on the original drive that you will need to copy to the new drive.

Did anyone contact you for the drive? Careful about sending it in the mail!

  14. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars NSV says:

Wow, I cannot believe it needs the hard drive to boot!
It should have it's OS in ROM or NVram. It's a digital portastudio, how big of a footprint can that be?
The disk should be reserved for music stuff only.
That's pretty weak engineering if you ask me.
Not only is the disk going to slow down bootup, but how does one archive their work? Are they expected to burn it all to CDR?

ps. Datecodes? Who needs dated codes. It's named Neo, so it's obviously from the 2000's.

If it was named Extreme/Xterme it would be from the 90's.
