To ad a little sidebar to slide rule folklore,……..back in the day!, 1960's and earlier, every engineering student, whether at Col-Poly or MIT, would always have their slide-rule hanging from their belt for transport. It was stored in a high quality leather holder with a loop to run your belt through………….If you were an engineering etc. student, you had one!!
I got a slide rule from a colleague back in 2005, I started working as an engineer, and i used it to do calculations..i sort off grew fond of these so i started designing them myself for machining calculations, and not to long ago i made a barrel shaped one that could fit in your pocket…
I was using slide rule in my univercity in mid 80s and I was much faster in my caculations than my fellow students. Amazing device if you know how to use it. Saves you a lot of time. Now almost impossible to buy.
I inherited five slide rules from my dad. 3 of them are 9.5โ basic beginner, one 10โ 18 scale Keuffel &Esser K4090-3 and my favorite 5โ pocket Frederick Post/Hemmi Japan 1461 Versalog with 23 scales.

I just discovered your channels, and I'm really happy to see this video. I went to college for electronics in 1974 and part of the curriculum was a slide rule course. Those students who were Vietnam Vets were the only students allowed to have calculators, because a basic 4 function calculator cost over $100, and the Vets – with the GI Bill – were the only ones who could afford it.

Hi there Fran ๐๐ i have a vintage Post brand slide rule from an auction ladt Tuesday. It was only $5.00 for it, its in good condition the glass is still in nice shape. Its made of Bamboo from Japan. Thanks for sharing ๐ you take care.

I used one all through college, several types.
Great video. Used a slide rule until my senior year in high school then was trained on using Smoley 's Four Combined Tables until i bought my first calculator abt 1980
