This is quite often problems at the recievers end with things like processing as you suggest because you're not the only Youtuber who gets comments from a minority about audio issues that the majority of the listeners don't hear.

So I wrote you a poem. Well I had chat-gpt write it. ๐Ÿค– I gave it the parameter's. Resistance is futile.

    Numbers, numbers everywhere,

They're in the sky and on the stair,

    From one to infinity,

They're more than we can ever see.

    Pi, that mystical ratio,

Is more than just a number, you know,

It's a symbol of circles round,

And the mysteries that they astound.

The digits of pi go on and on,

    A never-ending, infinite song,

Three point one four, and so much more,

    A mathemagical treasure to explore.

And then there's the golden ratio,

A number that has a special glow,

It's found in nature, art, and design,

And it's known to be simply divine.

The ratio of one to phi,

Is a constant that makes us sigh,

It's a perfect proportion we adore,

And we see it everywhere we explore.

From the petals of a rose,

To the swirls of a seashell's pose,

    The golden ratio's beauty shines,

    In everything we call divine.

So embrace the numbers, pi and phi,

    And their mysteries you'll simplify,

For in the world of math and art,

They hold a special place in every heart.

    …kinda scary. ๐Ÿ‘พ

Hi there Fran, nice to click on your feed again. I see there are an increasing number of people doing a similar line of work to what you are doing. I s there a rivalry between you electronics buffs as to who has the most toys, ie, oscilloscopes, meters, probes etc?

Your channels audio has never been an issue on my end as far as remember.

If thereโ€™s a problem on YouTubeโ€™s end with stereo enhancement, perhaps you can fake it out by just duplicating the audio track and sending it as stereo.

I've never noticed any audio flaws what so ever. I mean, I expect compression issues always because that's just the nature of streamed digital media, but I've never seen or heard anything out of the realm of what wouldn't normally be expected. Other than closed captions never seeming to be available, your stuff has always been top notch on this end.

I run youtube through my smart TV, audio is never a problem.
Other channels have very low volume though.

Hi Fran, audio engineer here who's seen this issue (though not with your videos). This back and forth vibrato seems to be a phenomenon unique to wireless ear buds. I notice it most often using my JBL ear buds while connected to my work laptop on Teams calls, though I've had it happen on my iPhone 12 as well (with the same wireless earbuds). Given the two earbuds are essentially two complete Bluetooth sound systems, one educated guess could be they're losing their time sync, or one earbud is dropping out and not catching up gracefully. I would bet, if we could create a Venn diagram of the people complaining to the location where the issue occurs, we'd see a wide overlap in locations with lots of 2.4 GHz wireless traffic. Only way around that is to use a wired headphone, I suppose.

Your stuff always looks and sounds fine to me, but could it be that youtube's video conversion is optimized for some industry standard like ITU 709 and that you need to conform closely to that for best results?

  11. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Andrew Hammel says:

I listened to on a desktop. Dont get any issues.

Regarding white and black levels being blown out, I've had issues before with youtube doing weird things to full-range video, they sometimes (always?) just assume what you upload is limited range (16-235) even if it's tagged otherwise and plays fine locally. Make sure your workflow is set up for a proper limited range export (may also be called studio or tv range). For a variety of silly reasons many things along the process still assume digital video is limited range and will be expanded to full display range on the playback device. A lot of newer software has mostly figured this out but some older things (like Vegas Pro 13 I still use) really hadn't and you may have to play around with levels. I typically transform all my sources to full range and then transform back to limited on the final output, unless I know the source is already limited and want to make minimal edits.

  13. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars xjet says:

Are you editing in a REC709 colorspace? If you're editing at video levels you need to do a color-space transform before rendering to your MP4 file or you will get exactly the symptoms (crushing of blacks, blow-out of whites) that you describe.

If it's a problem with uploading mono audio, then it might be worth spending the extra time to create your own version of fake stereo expansion on your mono track. Once you create your audio track in widened stereo, YouTube shouldn't attempt to modify that stereo audio signal at all during re-encoding.

It's probably that stereo audio tends to do better on the YT platform, thus YouTube is probably thinking they're helping you out by converting your mono track to pseudo-stereo. If you create it this way yourself before you upload, then that should bypass YouTube's re-encoder games. The benefit to doing this yourself, of course, is that you as a creator get to choose how your pseudo-stereo track sounds rather than allowing YouTube to modify it randomly. Clearly, they aren't doing it very well.

The other option is to dig into the royalty free music tracks that YouTube publishes for creator use and put a very low volume stereo music track behind your spoken words. As long as the content has some stereo content, YouTube shouldn't attempt to add any stereo expansion.

  16. Avataaar/Circle Created with python_avatars Witness101 says:

If that was a real issues – record labels would have a fit when their songs were uploaded. Do movie studios complain about their 4k movie trailers looking bad ? Since that's not the case – clearly the issue lies solely on your end. Putting blame on Youtube when it's clearly not the case in other works – is weak argument.
