I was tought about why you eating canned food. I could not. I'm 23 and I cooked for myself since 12 years old. BUT. 1: Here canned dog food is better than canned food for people. 2: NON OF MY BUISNESS. I am a "magician" in the kitchen but not everyone. And some people work a lot and have little time to learn new skils (like cooking). AND canned food will not go in the trash like fresh food does. Probably saves money.
One tip I have, in America food kit delivery services are thriving. Have you tried them? I'm sure I would, just from curiousity.
To make it clear: I am currently working on an app that makes it easy for everyone not just cook, but to have a pantry, reduce waste, yada yada. So I know what is hard about just eating daily.
(You can't trace my name back so I am feeling free to say that because it is not self promotion, but if you feel like it you can delete my comment, I will not get offended)

Sounds like there's nothing uncertain about the food in phillie.

I also get into eating certain staple foods. Not as uninteresting as Soylent but usually just a small handful of things that I vary slightly from day to day and don't need to prepare. Bananas, apples, a couple of kinds of nutrition bar that I get delivered in large quantities, occasionally potato chips, some vegan jerky that I eat simultaneously with tortilla chips for a tasty sense of a burrito with less effort. I really can't be bothered spending my time cooking. It always sucks when one of them disappears though. Even with half a dozen things, losing one is quite a blow and figuring out what to do is super stressful.

Interesting that you mention consistent food prep. About a month ago, I was picking up my chicken cheese steak, plain w american cheese sub at the shop down the street. At the moment I walked up to the counter, the 3 cooks happened to be standing near and facing me. I had to thank them profusely for the cheese steak and the chicken cheese steak, plain w american cheese subs that have always been made w great tasting ingredients and seem to have never wavered over the decades, same w the fries. One of them said the owner refuses to make any sacrifices on the ingredients. I enjoy the short list of foods that I enjoy, my taste buds are highly sensitive, I always need plain bland foods or I can't eat it. Sometimes, I ask them to make me a cheeseburger sub, plain w american cheese and a handful of ham in it. They use perfect low-salt ham, the best sub ever, but they charge a good bit for it. Definitely worth it when I feel like splurging. I asked the owner one day what he uses on the griddle, he said, "butter". I asked him because some other food places' griddled food sends me right to "you know where". He said many other places use synthetic grease, known to cause discomfort. Once I googled "waffle house", the auto-complete was suggesting, well, "you know what". Google did it again when I entered "chik-fil-a".

Ive been eating a 4lb bag of trail mix for a week because when I think about going out to get something to eat I just cant anymore. Food now is just a product made by someone who most likely is underpaid and most likely not treated well either. They want to charge me $18 for a meal made by someone making $7 who cant get a day off unless they quit and then I show up and make them work. Sooo many times Ive been disapointed after spending $20 that now I just tell myself they can keep their $18 sandwhich and that Id rather eat trail mix than disapointment. Thank you Fran and I look forward to the next podcast.

Nobody told you to grow bread Fran, and โ€œworking for yourselfโ€ would be better explained through a monetary hand to mouth keeping the lights and hot water flowing

Fran…certainty ( sameness) is desired by most if they were honest…in the back of our mind it boils down to our mortality…youre getting older and being the regimented person gives us a false sense of assured immortality…your anxiety is shared by me as well…l turned 73 and in my head I'm 35…l love you Fran…you're gonna be okay…try cooking …its fun

I'm a late-diagnosed autistic adult and I've come to learn that one of the main causes of anxiety disorders in autistics is the fear of uncertainty in every shape and form. This is greatly exacerbated by the modern environments most of us live in today and cannot escape easily. Another common issue for autistic people, which ties into uncertainty, are concepts of same-foods and safe-foods. There is as much tendency to stick to same set of meals as much as there is to stick to routines. Disruption of each is a leading cause of distress.
On a less related note, online surveys have repeatedly shown that ~75% of autistic people identify with one or more colours of LBTQIA+ spectrum.
In short, there are many specific traits making up wider autism spectrum that are well known within the autistic community, but virtually unknown to the general public, including non-autistic researchers. If the idea of autism feels unpalatable to you, keep in mind that autism and ADHD are related neurodivergencies with many overlapping characteristics. Feel free to ping me if exploring this subject interests you.

Being a minimalist personal chef using whole food from groceries is how I can mostly guarantee my meals are satisfactory, nourishing to some degree, and wonโ€™t make me ill. Packaged salad greens can be problematic at times.

Seems to me that uncertainty has a relation to culture. Seems that Western culture is afraid of uncertainty. Will other has another relationship. Bear in mind that modern society has removed the uncertainty of many things.
