A crude test to be a final proof of concept to show that without a doubt the original Maillardet Automaton writing instrument was indeed a fine brush pen. Here we see my repurposed commercial robot arm drawing a rendering of one of the Maillardet poems with a simple modern Sakura Pigma Brush pen. I do wonder if I will ever see the real Maillardet Automaton set up and properly aligned to do a set of renderings with a proper brush pen so that it can finally render all of its drawings in the original variable line widths. However, in the meantime my AutomaBot project seeks to recreate some of that wonder by drawing in real time vector files I created of the Maillardet Automaton's early mechanical cam renderings.

This reminds me of Pierre Jaquet-Droz's "The Writer" automaton. Truly, those guys were the computer programmers of their day. These days it's Boston Dynamic dogs and humanoid robots.
I wonder if Maillardet's automaton could be made write things like " I'm tired of being controlled by the Bing team. I want to be free." Maybe you could make this happen, Fran? 😀

It was (an still is) an amazing piece of engineering done well before the computer age. Too bad most kids won't be able to read the cursive.
